CANDLE STREET SUBSTATION
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
As the terminus for the island’s first submarine cable from the mainland, Candle Street Substation’s functional design necessitated fire-resistant materials of brick, site cast and precast concrete, and ceramic tile.The multi-room facility includes indoor power and telecommunications equipment and a visually-shielded outdoor transformer to serve the entire island. Located in the downtown district, the Greek Revival design reflects architectural vernacular of the past and received heightened attention prior to approval from Nantucket’s Historic District Commission.
